1991 ranger- 2.3L EFI- auto- 2wd
sometimes when the ignition switch is in the run position the fuel pump runs constant. other times it pumps up and shuts off .
i have checked the fuel pressure when it stays on, it runs between 35-40psi at the fuel rail and the middle relay under the fuse block stays energized. what turns the fuel pump off when ignition is in the run position? HELP!!!!
thanks 87xlt,
I have already tried that , then checked and still have power to relay. anybody know where power to relay comes from ?
is there a pressure switch built into pump? HELP AGAIN!!!!!!
The ECA/electronic control assembly controls the ground to the fuel pump relay & there are some codes for a bad ECA. Have you pulled the trouble codes?? You might get a code 19 "Failure in electronic control assembly-problems with internal voltage regulator" Or a 70 "Problem with electronic control assembly-failure in data commnications link" And there are a couple more.
last night i had a buddy over and he hooked up his new
SNAP- ON scanner. with the key in the on position the pump stayed on, but the scanner could not pick up any info! after about 5 minutes we reached in and turned the key and it started.
it was running real rough and the check engine light was on but NO INFO on the scanner. I was playing with wire harness and connections on the drivers side and it started running good and engine light went out. scanner picked up info but no saved codes. ran self test it reved up ect. usally when the pump sticks it takes several attempts to start, runs real bad and i drive it aprox. 5 miles and and takes off like a turbo {does'nt have one}kicks in. engine light goes out and it runs perfect UNTILL the next occurence. I'm going to try the wires again tonight because the pump is staying on again and does'nt want to start. this used happen once a month or less , now seems like everytime.
Good thing it is a backup vehicle !
ANY info appreciated !!!
The way that this works on my 87 -probably the same on yours- is when you turn the key to run the EEC power relay supplies voltage to the fuel pump relay and to the ECA. The ECA then grounds the Tan/light green wire from the fuel pump relay which turns the pump on. Take a look at your wiring diagram & if it's wired the same, shove a sewing needle thru that tan/light green wire & connect a test lamp between the needle & positive post of the battery (ignition turned off) if the lamp lights the wire is grounded somewhere & thats what is holding the relay closed.
B-4 doing this little test lets see if any of the other guys have any thoughts on this. I dont think this test would do any damage to the ECA,but then i'm no expert on this.
Don't have a wiring diagram! wish i did, looked at the library chiltons manual but it is mechanical not electrical.
I would like to have one, i have two good FLUKE meters and the ability to troubleshoot using them.
DOES ANYONE have a wiring diagram that could be attatched to a posting or E:MAILED thru this site? it would be APPRECIATED!
my problem seems to be at the relays on the passenger fender.
Three relays
1- green F19B 9345 A2A
1- brown E3AF 12A646 B2A
1- black E5SB 11433 A2A
i removed all 3 from mounting bracket and turned key on
pump stayed on and i moved relay connections. pump shut off 1 time while messing with brown relay, and several times while touching green relay. pump then started to work properly. I would turn key on, pump would start then shut off. Truck would start and run fine , I even took it OUT for a RIDE!!! After that i removed the ground on the passenger and drivers fender , cleaned and replaced. Pulled each relay and checked each socket for bad wires or corrosion, all OK. cleaned relay connections, sprayed sockets with cleaner and reassembled. Seems OK for now. Can anbody give me the name of of each relay, and possibly the sequence of operation?? All three switch during this process of turning the key to the on position, and one must not have been switching and caused trucks hard starting and poor running. THANKS in advance for all help!
i think the green relay is the fuel pump relay and the brown one is the eec relay
my 87 does not have a black one but i have seen a few that have i dont know what they are for
sounds right ,green relay does start pump and is energized by the brown one
i am going to have to stop at the library and check the chiltons manual. i've done that before and found the relays but my memory fails me
Still having intermittent problems with my ranger, can someone E:mail me wiring diagrams?
KEN00 i saw where you offered to E:mail diagrams to Mustang1970 and i tried to e:mail you to ask if you could help me but i can't because i don't have my 30 days or 25 postings covered yet!
ken i received your email but when i click on the link to reply it tells me i don't have my required 30 day, 25 post in yet. tomorrow will be 30 days but i'm only 1/2 way on posts
