To try to answer your question, it is only as hard as you make it.
OK, sorry about that, probably of little help. The main thing is that if you feel confident you can do it, go for it! Just make sure you TAKE YOUR TIME and don't get frustrated. Frustration leads to broken parts, knuckles, etc.
As you dive into the project, take notes, label parts, use a digital camera so you can refer back to it later.
As for the amount of time necessary, allow a weekend and have another vehicle around so if you need to go get parts, you don't have to pedal.
This is a big task and I've heard good mechanics complain about it, but if you can do it yourself and save $700-$800....then maybe you can splurge on some other toys for the truck, or at least afford to buy groceries for the next month or two (the latter would be my case)
