i was driving with my friend in my 67 f100 swb stepside and a stock 352 and my other friend wanted to race me in his 3.8 L mustang with cold air and underdrive pulleys so we found a place slightly downhill and started smoked my tires all the way through 1st shifted to second chirped and was ahead by a car length and shifted to third at 75 and he then blew by me. we were racing in a quarter mile andi was just wondering what i could do to up my prformance and/or win. i was thinking about a carb. only have 160$ please help
I was in the truck with him, I would think in a stock 67 after 75mph u would be done with the 1/4 mile what do u think, I am thinking of getting a new set of carb jets for the stock 2 barrell and jetting them out, putting a 45,000 volt coil on, a new high flowing fuel pump, a new high flowing air filter, and some new spark plugs and wires, would this help him win, that is on a low budget, that would be every bit of that 160 dollars.
BUT, if you must take on a Mustang....dont try it with a lowly 352. Do as I did...try a 428 CJ, dual quads, 4 spd, 4.56 gears
I dont have to worry about most mustangs
I gave up street racing more than 10 yrs ago. Got way too busy around town to play, even out on the 5 lane between towns. We had 12 miles of road to play on for years, then things grew and now the traffic is way to busy.
Anyhoo, I play at the track now, with full blown race cars. Much more fun....AND SAFER
The old '69 did run 13.40's right off the street. Not bad for back in the early 90's. Most factory cars could not keep up. Don't think any mustang or camaro would run anywhere below mid 14's.
first off sounds like u beat him in the 0-60 and 1/8, so he got spanked by a old turnip truck. tell him to get a real mustang and he can move up to racing against cars. my beat up stang is plenty fast but it isnt much good at hauling gravel and firewood, u aught be proud of ur truck as it is - m h o
yeah i was going to put a cam in it and eventually i will put in a 428 cobra jet. by the way i dont street race around town i go out in the middle of nowere find an open straight away and go at it but not on city streets sorry if i offended anyone
I think a 4 bbl would be a better choice, but I don't think you can get one for $160.
The air cleaner would help. I would nix the fuel pump as you're not sucking enough fuel down the 2bbl to warrant one. Check resistance on the wires before you do an unnecessary exspense. Add some weight to the rear. You're spinning the tires lost you lots of time. Maybe you can find some used DOT slicks for under $160.
I scrounged the swap meets and found a cast iron 4 bbl. intake for $10 that was sandblasted and ready for paint. I found another guy with a bunch of used Holleys and got a manual choke 600 cfm model 1850 for $30, gaskets and carb kit and spraypaint cost $47. So I got the whole deal for $87 and it really woke my old 352 up.
Since you sound like a young person you probably want something right now and don't have the pateince to spend months shopping and scrounging, if your truck is tuned up properly and you already have dual exhaust, then go look for a deeper rear gear. You should have no trouble finding one with lower gears that is within your budget and it is by far the cheapest way to knock some time off your E.T. Look in pickups with six cylinder engines, they were often geared lower than say a 390 automatic. And don't forget the well placed and secured weight. You don't want that old 390 block you decided on for ballast to go through your tailgate when you launch.
id say cam it too but you'd have to get all the right valvetrian componets also! i first got started buy buying a pair of flowmaster mufflers! then that woke me up in side now i get may truck in the 11's but i think the 250hp shot of NIRTIOUS will help me go a bit faster!!!!!
