Today I started my 4 wheel drive conversion. As I was pulling down the front axle I noticed that with everything else still connected that when i disconnected the shock, the axle dropped another inch or so. It did this on both sides. When I went in with the front drive axle it drops almost an inch below where the shock is fully extended.
Obviously I need longer shocks. BUT, what I need to know is what is is the compressed and extended lengths of a stock front shock for a 1985 F-150, that way I can see if the PO just put the wrong shocks on it or if I for some reason have extra axle movement that would warrant me having to get aftermarket shocks (for a stock setup).
That is actually the one of the main reasons that if you are doing alot of extreme offroading it is recommended to put limiting straps on so that the shocks are being poiunded, and eventually break
I checked the PN's and teh 4x2 and 4x4 shocks are the same. I happened to have a set of front shocks for a '67 F-100 laying around that extend longer and compress shorter, so i'm trying those out to see if they'll work out.
I threw the '67 shocks on and gave it the acid test and everything works GREAT. at full drop the shock still has about 4" of extension to go and at full compression the shock has about 4" of travel to go, too. I'm considering about a 1" lift and these will work great with that also (should be good for up to about 4" of lift)
