I had to pull my ECM to get my code so I can order my flip chip and I figured I might as well clean the connector edge so it'll be ready when I get the chip. I had directions that I printed out from the site on how to clean them and all that.
Now I got home and was looking on another site and their directions say
" DO NOT erode any of the silver material on the edge connectors"
the directions said nothing about this. what happens if you take some of that silver off - 'cause I did take a bit of the silver off - at the front edges of the connectors.
The silver is there to help make a better contact. Inserting the chip itself will cause some of the silver to come off. As long as the pins make good contact, there isn't anything to worry about.
Alright, hope you guys are right - 'cause it's official - I just ordered a flip chip!!! Great people to deal with - first time talking with them and already I was impressed!! Can't wait for it to come!
The best thing to do is lightly scrap off the flaky coating (Conformance Coating) with a razor blade, then use a pencil eraser to clean the contacts. Finish by cleaning with a little alcohol. The eraser kinda buffs away the junk without damaging the contacts, it's the best way to clean electronic contacts, i do it all the time at work.
If all you did is scrape the solder pads (contacts) enough to make them shinny, you should be ok, as long as there's still material on the pad it will make contact.
You won't be disappointed, going from a tuner to a chip is like night and day, you'll kick yourself for not doing it earlier.
After talking with them on the phone I ended up going with a stock setting and 50, 100 and 125hp tunes. I was going to get all tunes without the stock setting, but they suggested otherwise - and I drag around a heavy trailer every now and then so I wanted the 50 for that to be safe. So.. that's what i'm gettin'!!!
