odd noises from front
1)Some bumps cause a thump/heavy rattle from the front axle area. I've owned a few HD 4x4 that ride rough but do not make noises when going over bumps. The calipers also appear to be a little loose.
2)When starting the truck on a cold day there is a growl from under the hood. It sounds like the old power steering pumps that Ford ran in the 70's. This sound goes away after a few minutes of running.
3)On a REALLY cold day (below zero) it sounded like the truck was about to spit out a bearing on one of the accesories. I'm talking about a loud high pitched squell that brought my wife out of the house to figure out what was happpening. I've not had time to look at this one but it has me concerned that one of my accesories will sieze on a cold day. This sound also went away but ???
I will take the truck to the dealer but I'd like to point the service guy at the problem and have him fix it.

I've heard of loose caliper bolts as well as sway bar links.

Someone else I talked to experienced the same thing. It is the power steering pump. Seems the extreme cold makes the fluid thick and takes a few seconds for the pump to start moving it. Have 'em put new fluid in it and see if it can help. Maybe a switch to a synthetic fluid will work??? Of course, checking the fluid level is the first order of business.
Chk your the fan hub unit/ mine makes a growling noise when cold goes away after a few mins.I believe it has fluid in it/sealed bearings to alow it to slip at low rpms/low temp as rpms /temp rises it begins to act like a clutch.it trys to not rob hp from the engine. could be the source of that growl!
