part swaps

I was wondering what parts interchange between 53-56 and 57-60 trucks? The suspensions and axles? the engines?

I have seen posted here (somewhere) that front axles will interchange between the 57-60 and 53-56. Im here to tell you that they dont. I bought a dropped axle that was a 57-60 truck by mistake, and the spring perches were 2" wider on the 57-60 than they are for the 53-56. Im no pro fabricator, but this is what I found out. Lets see if someone else could clear things up.

55 forder, do you wish to sell your dropped front axle? I almost bid on a 53-56 dropped axle on Ebay, to use on my 60 truck, I'm glad I passed on it now. So far I have not found any significant body or chassis parts that interchange between 53-56 and 57-60 trucks.

I've seen in parts books where 1953-1967 Stepside bed and fenders (rear of course) will interchange. Is this so?

So the axle perches are two inches wider on the newer trucks. What are the dimentions on the 53-56 front axle?

I would go out in the garage to measure the distance for you, but I recently traded my dropped axle for shiny new Ididit tilt column (in the box no doubt).

Csimmons: Try searching the forums for "dropped axles" I remember posting about the situation I had, and some kind soul gave me the measurements. Most times I can find the answer to my questions I have by doing this, instead of posting and waiting for a bite.

OK,
I was the one who posted that the 57-60 axles would fit into a 53-56 and the end result would be a 1" drop. I found this info in a May 1980 hot rod hot trucks issue mag. I have personally never done one of these swaps, but today I measured the width of my springs at their perches and my measurement was 34 1/4 " from outside of one spring to the outside of the other.

I then called 4speed and had him measure his 1960 f100 in the same manner that I did. With the help of his dad the called me back with the EXACT measurement of 34 1/4" The same as I measured on my 56f100.

The only difference was the 60 springs were a 1/4" wider than the 56 springs. Therefore the center measurement was 1/2" off.

These are the FACTS folks!
Kevin Bigwin56f100

55forder, You may have had a 61-64 as they are wider than the 53-60's

Beds won't necessarily interchange. Depends on the year. I bought a '53 F-100 parts truck and the bed was off a newer truck. Not sure what year. The fender mounting bolts are three inches higher so my running boards won't line up. I'll have to move the bolts. I assume the bed came off a styleside cab. The shorty running boards I found in the cab should have tipped me off.

Hope this helps!
