I may have misposted this in the 6.0 forum so I'm repeating it here....
I've had some persistant problems with cold starting my 2001 PSD F250 4x4, automatic.
I've already had to replace the glow plug relay twice and when I ask WHY? i get no answers. I'm about 13,000 from the end of my warrantee and I'd like it fixed once and for all.
Am I doing something that's causing this? Is it a serious problem that they don't want to deal with at the "deal"ership?
INQUIRING MIND WANTS TO KNOW!
I have to plug it in every night if it gets down to freezing or it takes lots of tries and white smoke before it starts.
Good evening and welcome to the site if you have not been welcomed before.
I would have them make sure they used the correct relay for the glow plugs. You should have two - one for the glow plugs and one for the intake heater. The glow plug relay is about 4x the cost of the intake heater relay - there is a reason for that.
Keep after them, you are still under warranty and if you are having subsequent visits for the same problem without resolution there should not be multiple deductables for you to pay. Multiple "tries" to get it started indicates the relay probably works but you probably have one or more (most likely more) glow plugs bad.

i had the same problem with my 2001 it was in the dealer twice and the glowplug controler was replaced once and the other time they said everything was fine, but still had the problem. then i switched my oil to delvac 5-40 full synthetic and have not had a problem since,(its made by mobile 1 and you can get it at grease monkey)in fact on a recent trip trip to wisconsin it fired right up at -8 degrees
I'll be taking it in for an oil change this week and I'll see how that works. Otherwise I'll have to read them the riot act! I want it fixed since I can't always plug it in when I'm on the road.
Thanks for the replies. I'll let you know what happens
I think the most likely answer is that you have some glow plugs that need to be replaced. You could also have some injector o-rings that have failed making it harder to get good compression.
