Carb Trouble?
Carb Trouble?
i just put a brand spanking new 670 truck aveger carb on my 1985 F250, with a 351w, but i am having problems starting and keeping the truck running. it will start up but only run for about five seconds then die. does anyone know what the problem could be? for some background info i have replaced the rotor and plugs and have a new battery. but i don't think those have anything to do with the prblem. could someone help, i would love to go out and test the new capabilities of the truck avenger that i have heard so much about.
aj10,
Did you set the float level on the carb after you installed it? Sounds like it's running out of fuel in the bowl.
Make sure to go through the instructions provided with the carb carefully. There is a tuning process you need to go through to get the most out of your new carb.

tuned the carb up this weekend. its running good now. it turned out that there was a vacum port that was not pluged. that implroved it dramatically.
but know i have hit another problem. its seem that no matter how i adjust the fast idle and curb idle screws the truck still idles fast in park. do you guys have any ideas? thanks for the help

aj10,
It sounds like the throttle is not closing against those screws. Check to make sure that the throttle cable and trans kick down are not keeping the carb from closing against the set screw. The easiest way to do that is to snap the throttle cable off and then operate the carb by hand to see if it will settle back to idle. If the cable is keeping the throttle from closing it probably just needs to have the bracket bend forward a bit. I used a small hammer and gave it a medium wack and it took care of the problem.
It the throttle cable and/or rod isn’t the problem then something on the carb is binding up. Check both sides of the carb as you operate the throttle by hand looking to see what might be binding. If you can’t see anything then it may be the throttle plates binding against the manifold or gasket. You will need to remove the carb and again operate it by hand to see if it is closing on its own against the idle speed screw.
Good luck,
Mark
