We have the M5OD tranny which is a crappy Mazda transmission. In the future I am thinking of upgrading to the T5 Lightning transmission. I think the only problem I've heard of so far is the weight issue. The Lightning tranny is like 500 pounds heavier...I think BUT the Lightning tranny is a solid tranny that is FAAAR more dependable than our Mazda tranny's. What do yall think?
I have a T5 I don't see why a T5 wouldn't fit your trucks. The bellhousing bolt pattern is the same as the 3.8 as well as all SBF's. Unless your input shaft is different?? But I don't see why Ford would spend money change that for the 4.2 when they already had one available in the "parts bin" to throw in there
don't get defensive here but, i know the ranger guys like to say the same thing about the M5OD "oh its crap" "break down all the time" etc, etc, but do you guys here have any solid eveidence of it breaking down? i happen to think that it's just gotten a bad rep because it's a mazda tranny and there aren't too many aftermarket pieces or even support for it. i know a guy who is using his M5OD behind hi 350 hp turbocharged 4cyl and it still works fine.

My redline (the point at which I stop making power) is at 5200rpm's. My rev limiter kicks it at 5600rpm's. My new heads will already have valve springs installed on them that will let me safely rev to ~6400rpm's, I just want to get some RR's, and I need a cam so I can actually make power at 6400!
Oh and to answer your first question. The tranny is alright. A lot of people think that the T5 used in the 99 and newer V6's is as strong as the T5 WC tranny. It does whine a little more than most, especially with a triax shifter. What is bad about your transmissions?

Drizzt: Yes, I have some very convincing evidence against our tranny's. No, I don't have it here to show you...just personal experiences. If you don't take really good care of them, you could ruin it in under 15000 miles. I've seen it happen a few times where I live...and that was with one Mazda, and an F150. It ultimately depends on how you take care of it. I'd say if you treat it like royalty, it will never let you down.
I would say that it would physically bolt on alright. There are a few things that I don't know about though. If you have a different input shaft (larger or more splines) it won't work. Also the length of the transmissions, if the T5 is too long or too short you'll need a custom driveshaft made. So I don't know enough to say "go for it!", if you're really unhappy with your tranny then I'd research it more.
