I have an 88 Ford Ranger. 2 litre with a 2 barrell carb. Operating temperature never seems to go above the first line on the guage. Here's what I've done:
1. New heater core (old one was leaking)
2. New thermostat ( only a couple of bucks to replace)
3. Pulled the water pump off to check (looked ok to me)
4. Fan clutch has slight resistance when cold
Now: The heat never seems to be above lukewarm at best. Have put cardboard in front of radiator with little noticeable difference.
Actually took the fan off and boy did she ever heat up (put it back on, afraid of overheating)
Truck sucks on gas mileage Hwy or city about 17 mpg.
What could be causing the motor not to obtain normal operating temperature?
When it's cold, a 2 litre engine just isn't going to put out a ton of heat. Switching from your stock fan to a electrical one would probably help it since it would not be pulling air through the radiator all the time. I am a bit surprised that the cardboard didn't do much but removing the fan did. Sounds like your fan is a strong puller.
