99 Ford Ranger XLT 2.5 L.
Truck hasn't been warming up so after posting some things to some boards I determined I should replace the thermostat because it was stuck open. I went to Autozone today and purchased a Fail-Safe thermostat. I got the thermostat housing off and the old thermostat out.
I CAN'T GET THE NEW THERMOSTAT IN.
It appears to be too big but I double checked when I bought it to make sure I had the right one. I even looked up the part on Autozone's website (where you pick the car you are looking for parts for) and it came back with the same part no.
Should it be an extremely tight fit??? I don't want to push too hard because I'm afraid I'll break the thermostat housing..
If you want a better fit, take your old thermostat in and have them match the exact size. Autozone is notorious for screwing up order and part numbers.
Funny you should mention that. I took the new one and the old one in to Autozone today to get the right one. He brought out a different brand and it was still the wrong one. I showed them the original thermostat and the difference between the two and he acted like he couldn't care less. Oh well, I'll wait until the dealership opens on Monday and get one from them.
You could file it down a bit to make it fit, but I agree that it should have fit in the first place. Don't force it, that will just lead to other problems. Sometime's the bigger hammer is not the answer.
