Hello everyone, My '98 Expedition will not idle so I have to feather the gas pedal to keep it running, also the check engine light came on. The problem started after my wife filled the tank with gas. She drove it about 8 miles without any problems . I tried starting it about an hour later and the vehicle was difficult to start and ran very rough. I feel it that it might be water in the fuel but I want to get some feedback from the "EXPERTS". THanks in advance
Could be bad gas, bad IAC, bad coils/wires (depending on your engine) or any other number of things. If the light is still on, head to Autozone and have them read your codes and go from there....hopefully you'll be able to pinpoint the problem.
That's the location on a 5.4 engine. The location on the 4.6 is on the driver's side and much easier to access after you unbolt the plastic "4.6" cover on top of the engine.
Hee Hee, I thought that my name would get some attention.
Anyhoo, I took the plastic cover off and removed the bypass valve. After I removed the valve I noticed a large vacuum port at the back of the intake manifold open to the air. I intalled the new valve(just because it was so difficult to remove the old one) and started the engine with my finger over the vacuum port and it ran fine. The engine ran until I removed my finger from the vacuum port. I looked everywhere for a loose vacuum line, but I could not find one. Maybe there was a cap that fell off. Does anyone out there know?. Thanks
Mine was a 98 that did exactley same thing and started after wife got gas and I thought same thing but it was the IAC and cost me $135 at dealer and it works like a charm now that IAC was replaced.
I have a 5.4 with a bad IAC--how the heck do you get a socket to turn the bolts?? It's really a tight squeeze even to get a socket on the bolts, much less ahving enough room to turn them. Can anybody give me a hint?

You need a very small (1/4" drive socket wrench) and patience. I've done mine a couple times and actually had a harder time with the wire plug than with the bolts.
