startin ...almost?

im trying to help a friend over the phone to get his 78/302 truck to run, and im at a loss, he says it starts fine sometimes and other times it almost fires as he releases the ignition switch. with the key on , and jumping across the solinoid , as he releases the jumper it almost starts also . he has pulled the coil wire and watching it close to the dist . cap , it fires as he releases the jumper. he says he has replaced the controll box, with out doing any good . does any one know something i could tell him over the phone that would get him back into town? many thanks, bob

Sounds like he is only getting power to the coil positive through the resistor bypass circuit. If he wants to get it running just to get home, run a wire from the coil positive to the battery positive, and then see what happens.

If you want to verify this is the problem, turn the key to run without starting the truck, and see if there is 12 volts on the coil positive. If not, the resistor located in the wiring harness somewhere under the dash may be burnt out. If you have a haynes manual, look at the diagram with the ignition switch in it. You will see the resistor not too far away from the switch, with the resistor feeding the lightgreen/red coil wire.

PS That may be a red/lightgreen wire.
