So here I am traveling to Portland via St. Louis, and at each airport (both coming and going), I am pulled out of line, spread-eagled while searched, shoes off, x-rayed, bags searched, etc. BTW, I am a white male in my mid thirties, dressed neatly, buzz cut. While I am being searched in Portland, I notice two men of middle-eastern descent wearing turbans boarding the plane with no problem. Coincidentally, it seemed that all of the screeners were either African American, or Hispanic.
If it was Portland Oregon, the reason is simple. Over the past few years the Oregon INS has had a bad record of detaining truly innocent foreigners, I don't mean this jokingly. They really did seem to be harrassing foreigners. Some were strip AND body cavity searched(Did you get one of those ;^) Some were involuntarily locked up for a weekend at a local hotel even though their papers were in legal if worn out order.
So I guess because the local INS got slammed so hard for stopping foreigners, they now do the next best and politically correct thing, they do this to us WASP looking types, especially angry white males.
Dang, I remeber the good old days, back in 1990 me and my wife went on a trip overseas. I at the time, was very tanned and had a black beard and wore dark sunglasses. I was sometimes called the "Arab Terrorist" jokingly I think. It was funny, the airport security people usually stopped my wife, who is a typical American looking blond, while they just passed me thru. I guess they were going under the assumption that a terrorist wouldn't be dumb enough to carry contraband, they would just let their blonde woman carry it.
Only creature that ever gave me any trouble was a drug sniffing dog who went wild at the smell of some crackers and jerky in my flight bag.

looking forward to my next body cavity search at the airport.
Recently exVP AL Gore was in Milwaukee for a Democratic fund raiser. He was searched here in Milwaukee and where he boarded the plane but I can't remember where that was. Hope it makes you feel better.
Believe it or not Al Gore was pulled out of line as a "selectee" both coming and going. The whole situation is rediculous. I agree with American's CEO, Don Carty, when he explains why the random at the gate search should be done away with. If the main security people, with the metal detectors and xray machines, were doing their job properly this whole random search would be unecessary. Additionally, it is angering the business traveler such as Old Blue Crew and the airlines can't afford to push away the business traveler.
Old Blue Crew, you mentioned you went through STL. I take it you were on American. Did you have the opportunity to go through the STL security? There is a special screening point for employees and it seems the rules change every day. For example, the simple act of taking a cup of coffee consists of placing the coffee in a tray to go through the xray, then take off the lid and show the screener, and last you have to take a drink of it. DUH! I want to put a sticker on my flight bag that says "Beware of the coffee!"
This is all for the greater good. After the next big explosion in our skies, more people will call for the borders to close and to throw illegal arabs out of the country. The libral terror-sympathizers will lose more ground. I don't know why polititians seem to think we need open borders anyways, unless it's to ensure democrats a sure pool of voters. The down side is that we're going to have to lose a few thousand more lives before we all wake up.
It was Portland, Oregon by the way. I was totally unaware of the problems there in the past. Yes, I flew American out of Springfield, MO to St. Louis, then to Portland. I won't even mention the twelve hour delay in St. Louis due to weather.(Stupid six dollar airport beers). I connected in Dallas on the way back. I just thought it would be reasonable to give a guy a pass of some kind once he has already been searched at the checkpoint and again at the gate that he is probably ok for the rest of that leg of the trip. But noooooo!
Interesting that you mention Tim McVeigh, and certainly a valid point. Coincidentally, I served in his unit and had the pleasure of busting him up in the pugil stick pit back in '88.
On a lighter note, the machine shop will be done with my block (390) this week and it will be time to start slapping Old Blue back together.
