If you were advising someone on purchasing a used SD, what would you advise? I relize there have been a few very p'od owners, but every brand has its lemons, we don't need to revisit them. I was just wondering if there are particular years to stay away from, engines, transmissons ect. Thanks!
I'll go first here- I think most folks would recommend staying away from the early 1999 models- this was the first model year and there were problems with the tranny cooler not being adequate (there is a TSB for this), poor cup holders and the V-10 was a little underpowered compared to the 2000 models. The 1999 and 2000's with the V-10 may exhibit the "exhaust flutter" problem that was corrected by a TSB that called for the installation of a new, more restictive y-pipe. I believe all of the 2001's have this new y-pipe. There also was a problem with "piston slap" in the V-8s, and possibly the V-10s(?)- somebody else may have more detail on this.
I have a 2000 V-10 and had the TSB for the y-pipe performed, and a leaking lower radiator hose clamp replaced. Other than that I haven't had any other problems with the truck that weren't the fault of the dealer (but that's another story )
