[updated:LAST EDITED ON 11-Mar-02 AT 01:19 AM (EST)]My dad and I are expecting the new SD in a week or so, yeah! Can't wait to start getting it set up with tires, flares, bug deflector and towing acc!
MY QUESTION:
Now realize that I am coming from driving a simple '78 here!
Can you "roll-start" or "pull-start" these new manual-trannied diesel or fuel-injected engines? Ya know, if your battery goes dead, but you happen to be parked on a hill, so you put it in 2nd and the key to the run position, then pop the clutch to fire it up when you get rolling?
If the battery is completely dead there won't be any power to run the electronics, so I don't think so. But if the battery is not dead and you have a manual tranny then you probably could. I'f your that worried about it then get a battery booster pack to carry with you.
P.S just turn off your head lights it's easier.
Peace,

Yes, it will work, on a gas engine anyways. Did it once on my 2001 V-10 just to see, and a couple of times on my 88 efi 460 'cause I had to. The other poster is probably correct in that you need a little power left to run the fuel pump and electronics, but I suspect that is also true of the pre-electronic engines. The alternator needs excitation voltage to produce power.

It takes a minimum of 8 volts or 9 volts to make the injectors work on a Power Stroke, I don't recall exactly, but you do need somewhere around one of those numbers. If you need to know more info, I can get it for you, or refer you to the guy that has the scoop.
That's actually a GOOD question. I would like to know too. Some people say you can, some say you can't. If your battery is dead, then you have no glow plugs, so I imagine it would be difficult especially if cold.
Here is the "offical" answer from Dieselmann regarding push starting a PSD with low or dead batteries. Hope this helps.
"You have to have at least 9 volts for the PCM to even power up. If the batteries are not completely dead you may have enough voltage to power the system providing you don't try to engage the starter."

I have a 2001 250 with the V10....i don't think you have to worry about the battery dying....i have left my stereo system and lights for close to three hours and start the truck right up...
