TIA for reading this post. I have a 1984 Ranger, 4x4, 2.8L V6, 4spd stick, barebones. having alot of trouble with power loss and running way rich. have changed the accelerator pump, fuel filter, cap, rotor, plugs and wires. idles ok, wants to stall when you take off, very low power, less than 5MPG. I am in no way a mechanic and can't really afford to take it to a shop.
Any ideas for me?
edit: this thing also has a Distributor from an 85 broncoII in it. don't know if this matters at all. not really sure if the entire engine was replaced at one time with an engine from a broncoII.
Get a vacuum guage and check for vacuum leaks. If you don't have one, the are pretty cheap. It will tell you if valves are sticking, any leaks, and lots of other problems. Also if you can check the compression, that will tell you a lot of info. Distributor shouldn't matter, if it came off a 2.8. Check the timing (make sure you remove the wire for the advance) and also check the carburetor for adjustment. If it's rich that is usually a good first place to look. Pull the plugs to see what they look like. A good indicator also.
