Already posted in the transmission forum but somone suggested listing it here also.
A friend of my dad has a rebuilt c6 for a 4x4 for 250 bucks, I know it is built good this guy doesent do anything half azzed. Problem is it is for a 4x4 and I need it for a 2wd. My questions are 1. How hard would it be to take the tranny apart and replace the tail shaft and tail housing if I can find the parts. I have a manual from the parts store that isnt to bad but I would like an opinion from some one that has done somthing like this. 2. Also are all c6 inards the same, can I find any old c6 for the tail shaft and housing or does it have to be the housing and shaft from one with a 460 engine (heavier duty?) since that is what it is going behind. 3. Any favorite shift kits? I think it already had on but not sure, just in case you know.
Hooboy. I am sooo not a C-6 guru. Its the only thing on my truck I'm not real familiar with. Well, scratch that since its not on my truck though
I "think" I can answer your questions though.
As far as I understand there isn't any reason you can't use a 4x4 C-6 in your 2x4. Just ignore the mounting plate for the transfer case lever. If you HAD to switch the tail housing thats not a very big deal, you could do it. Don't think it matters which one you grab it off. There are some differences in the C6 innards, not sure on specifics. I've had luck with the Transgo shift kits, have one in mine and it worked good.
i had almost the same problem with my c6 the tailshafts are different lengths between 2 wheel and 4wheel also the different tcases use different shafts that was the problem i had i had a 205 case and a 208 short shaft c6 to change it you need the tailshaft and housing and you do have to dis assemble the transmission also i have a tci semi manual valve body that shifts auto in drive but allows manual downshifts and upshifts but it has a very agressive shift my truck will bark 35 inch bfg mt on dry pavement
no you can just slap a tail shaft housing on the output shafts are different lengths, and yes you have to dismantle the trans to remove the output shaft, but this is not hard to do as you do not have to disamble clutches just remove the entire gear train, then the clip that holds the output shaft in, and you will have to remove the park pawl cover. on the inner guts between C-6s the answer is yes and no the differences are year specific mainly, and in the clutch packs, but no difference in the output shaft just stay to the same year group as the trans you are putting this in ie 76, and earlier, or 77 and later.
the output shaft on a 4x4 C6 is about 2 inches shorter then that of 2wd C6. you can throw a 2wd tailshaft cover on it and go. but you'll have less splines in the slip yoke on the 2wd shaft. which with you 460 power plant you have greater odds of stripping the splines out. So your better off replacing the output shaft or just mating a tcase to it to give you that low 2wd pull if needed.
It's my fault I was the one who pointed him to you. I fogured you had so many problems that you were the king now, Pro. I also said that it he did not want it that I would take it in a heartbeat!!!!
I really dont want the extra weight and lever of the tcase plus the cross member since it is going in a 2wd truck. But a great idea! So it should be easy to take apart and all I should need is a tailshaft out of any 2wd c6, any size motor car or truck of need be as long as I have the macthing housing. Sound right?

pretty much. If it was me I would go to a junk yard, and get them to sell you a core trans. like I said earlier though just to be on the safe side I would try, and get one that is in the same year group as the one you have with the split bieng 76down, 77up. I don't believe there are any differences in the tail shaft I think it is mostly in the VB but I am putting this in just to be on the safe side. Then when you are done put the core transmission back together, with all it's pieces, and you should be able to sell it and get your money back or maybe alittle extra on what the core cost your origanally
I'd say just grab a t-case and a crossmember outta a 4x4 truck. 2lo comes in handy! BUT, if your insistant on pulling that transmission apart, my first piece of advice is to MAKE SURE EVERYTHING is spotless inside of that transmission. Invest in a parts washer and use it, ALOT! Also, the tailshaft from a 2wd is about 8" longer (just eyeballing the two shafts I have outside) than a 4wd shaft. You'll need the tailhousing also. Make sure you keep everything in order and DON'T halfass it!!!!
