using a volt ohm meter or a test light how do i check a length of wire to tell if its broken inside the insulation or is shorted? Such as from one end of the field wire to the plug that connects to the reg. can i hook the test light in series with the batt and wire?can i test the other contacts as well on reg plug?will voltage be supplied to all terminals of plug by putting power to field wire end?
If this is this a chunk of wire not fastened to anything your wanting to check for continuity? Or if you can, unplug the wire your wanting to check. Check it from terminal end to terminal end.
On your volt meter, turn it the ohm section, with the indicator on 20K. Just touch each terminal to each end of the wire. If its not broken you will get a reading of some sort, probably like 0.00. If its broke you will get no change in the reading at all, as if you had not touched it to anything.
Of course, wiggle the wire to make sure it is not loosing continuity when jostled.
thanx homeboy, sorry it took me so long to reply just got off work. I'm going straight out to my truck and try it like you said I'll get back to you and let you know what happened..
if it's a really long wire unhook both ends and hook one in to a good ground connect a test light to power source and probe wire if it lights wire is good.
thats what i did isolated wire hooked in series with the batt and used a test light. Since all wires lit up testlight when doing the test this way that means there good and should cause my batt to charge if alt is good correct? the reg is good too..
