bad stator 2

what causes a stator to go bad? I'm on my third alt. in as many days#s 1+2 both had bad stators,I had #3 tested before I left advance auto and it checked out good. I'm trying to figure if it was due to a mistake on my part or if the rebuilds were just garbage. right now I'm scared to install the good one cause I don't know if maybe the bad stators ruined my regulator which was new 2 alts. ago. Let me tell you a little about #1-2. On #1 I pulled the batt. cable off while engine was running(definite nono). On#2 after installing a new reg. I hooked the stator wire up to the ground terminal on back of alt and started the engine, and found no voltage rise at batt This system worked fine since 1984 until original equipment wore out, there were no shorts, drains,or problems. oh yeah I installed a new fully charged batt so thats not the problem.could the electric choke which also is 6 months old cause the stator problem?

an ignition module would cause the stators to keep going bad?the truck starts up and runs fine yet it could still be bad?

im not positive
but on mine i had a short i couldnt track down
i had to unhook my battery everynite cause it would
drain off my batt
so then it got to where it wouldnt recharge anymore after like 3- 4 months

and sure enough my 3 month old regulator went bad
well finally it just quit runnin altogether
and it was my ignition module

so i replaced both my regulator again and my ignition module
and my short was gone

so im sure that short killed my first new regulator
and replacin both fixed all my problems

so im thinkin if it can kill my regulator
it might kill your alt too

More than likely you got the regulator when you hooked it up wrong. Also you have to disconnect the battery to change the VR
If you don't It will fry them. I never leave the parts store with a starter or altenator with out testing I live to far out to make the trip twice for a bad part. And a Lot of rebuilds especially arrow are junk.
