I got to get a spare to keep in the truck
Rick Sweares
I found my truck through Autotrader.com and fortunately, it was within driving distance of home. I went up and looked at the truck, and liked what I saw. I was really surprised the asking price was as low as it was, but didn't question it. I looked for the "hidden damage" that would bring the price down, but couldn't find any, so I bought it. After having the truck for a few days, it died on me at a red light. It restarted, and I wrote it off. Then, it did it again a few days later. I got to thinking something wasn't right. I started searching the past threads to learn about my problem, and determined that the CPS was going out. I went over to International, bought another one, and installed it. My problem went away. A few days later, the salesman that sold me the truck called to see if I was enjoying it. I told her that I was. She then asked if it had ever died on me. I immediately asked why she asked that.
She informed me that the previous owner had taken the truck to three different Ford dealerships to have the problem fixed, but they couldn't diagnose it. He got frustrated with it, and traded the truck on a new Dodge. The dealership detailed the truck and put it on the lot. Every time someone would test drive the truck, it would die on them. Of course, nobody wanted a truck that died all the time, so the dealership sent the truck into the shop for diagnosis. The Dodge mechanics couldn't figure it out, either. They tried a bunch of things, and finally replaced about half the injectors trying to get it to stop dying at red lights.
They put the truck back on the lot, and it died during the first test drive. The sales manager decided to drop the price and get it sold. She was merely curious if I'd had any trouble with it. I told her that I'd fixed the problem for less than $100, and she nearly dropped the phone.
That story is absolutely true, and why I bought my truck for $15K two years ago.
