2000-2002 differences

Wife and I will soon be in the market for a replacement for the 96 Bronco. Thinking 2000-2002 Excursion (diesel).

Any major pro's/con's in that year span?

TIA

Jeff

There aren't too many differences between my old 2000 and my new 2004 equipment/styling wise, so I don't think there would be much between '00 and '02 at all. Both of mine were V-10s so any engine differences will need to be addressed by a diesel owner.

You should look for the most for your money. The minor differences won't matter.

The early-2000 model has its rear brake calipers mounted kind of catty-wompass. The passenger caliper is mounted behind the rear axle (like ALL other calipers on late-2000 and later models), while the driver side caliper is mounted in front of the rear axle. Weird. The 2000 models also had the shallow cupholders at the forward end of the console (trivial item, I know, but many have gone the extra mile to relace theirs with the deeper version). Other than that, I'd go for the one with fewer miles.

2002 was a good year for Excursion equipment and styling wise. The 7.3 got more power and somehow gets better mileage than ever before. The interior got a few more amenities like radio controls on the wheel and second row captains chairs. 2002 was also the first year that the crystaline headlights came standard on all models instead of just the "No Boundaries" trim. There weren't any or too many problems with the 2000-2002 lineup besides the Firestone tire issue. But if I were you, I'd look into a 2002 model. Best of luck to ya', happy hunting!

Having owned a 2000 and replaced it with a 2002, I can say that there are more differences than I thought. We really loved our 2000 PSD but love our 2002 even more. The front seats are nicer, has adjustable pedals, you can control the stereo and heater from the steering wheel, better headlights, more power, better mpg and the engine is more quiet. Good luck in your search and try to be patient. We had to look way outside our area (found ours in Chicago) to buy ours.

Big Sky, is yours a oiller or a gasser? Curious as to Excursion mpg on the oiler - neighbor has a 2002 F250 2WD with the 7.4, would like some real world comparison.

Ours is the 7.3 Powerstroke. When I drove it back from Chicago I got 16.5 mpg hand calculated on winter blend and that was going at 72-75 mph. I'm looking forward to see what we'll get with summer blend. On our old Exc PSD I got about 15 on winterblend highway, 16-19 summer blend. Around town it ranged from 13-15 mpg.

Hey LANDYOT, where can I get deeper cup holders, becaue I keep having to pick up water bottles, etc from the passenger floor board, the stock 2k x cupholders are very shallow.

Thanks!

Well, shoot! I forgot THAT one (!!!) .... was one of the changes made in later models. Just go to your local Ford dealer and get the cup-holder portion of the console for a later model year. The new piece of plastic will have some clips that will give you a clue on how to remove the old one. I usually use the cup-holder that slides out from the dashboard since I "holster" my carry-piece in the console's cup-holder.
