Hey guys.....I recently purchased a 1966 f250 2wd with a 240 6cyl. It has 55k miles on it and it is bone stock. I am wanting to restore it(what little is needed) and I would like to be able to put a suspension/body lift on it to put 31 or 32in tires under it just to make it look a little more sporty. I have never worked with anything like this before so I am new to the entire process. Could anyone tell me what might be the best way to accomplish this?...where to start and what to look for.....how many inches of a suspension or a body lift(or maybe a combination of both)............what can I expect as to any modifications that may be needed for the steering?
You guys all sound like you know what you are doing. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in Advance.
Secondly, not too many folks are raising a 2wd truck up, usually the tendancy is to go lower....
Now to your question, I had a buddy toss a 1 1/2 inch body lift (or cut 3 inch I should say) on his mid 70's truck for the same reasons. This was accomplished 20+ years ago, but then not much has changed. It looked nice and he stuffed about the equal of 31's in the fenders. I would stick with the body lift, but then again, I don't think you would be able to find anything to lift the suspension anyway.
I was briefly considering some kinda body lift on my 65 F250 but scrapped the idea when I realized the front bumper was gonna stay in the same place. That'd look pretty stupid!
There would also be steering column and clutch linkage issues.
Couldn't see no way to raise the twin I-Beam without camber issues unless I made new lower pockets for the inboard end of the I-Beams, and then ya got steering geometry issues. The radius rods are another trouble spot.
Check Autofab, they have the best 2wd lift available. I dont have the web site but they advertise i the offroad mags. Body lifts suck for many reasons, fisrt off they offer no suspension travel, they raise the center of gravity and look ugly. Plus, as pntrbl said, the bumpers stay at the same spot. The only advantage is more tire clearance, but do it right with a suspension lift instead. You could also swap to 1 ton fenders in the front for added clearance. Autofabs lift is new coils bent beams modified radius arms... They are not cheap though! Good luck!
