I have a 2002 F250 PSD with the 110hp super chip, 4" dynomax exhaust and a K&N filter. I've owned it since August of last year with no problems, absolutely love it. Anyway, the other day I tried putting it in reverse and it took a while to engage. I was at work so I didn't really have time to dink with it. But on the way home, I noticed that it wasn't really shifting normally. It took longer than usual to go from gear to gear. So when I got home I checked the fluid and no reading on the dip stick. After adding 2 full quarts and driving a couple days, it seemed to be back to normal, so I thought. There seems to be a little delay for reverse to engage.
Today, as I was driving home, I noticed that the overdirve light on the gear shift was blinking (what does that mean?). During the blinking phenomenon, I noticed that I didn't have any delay going into reverse, acted like it was supposed to. So, in order to stop the blinking, I shut the engine off and restarted. Tried reverse and the delay was back again... Sorry for the long and drawn out message, but can anyone explain whats going on and what I need to do to fix?
With the overdrive light blinking there is a very good possibilty that you have an error code stored in your computer. Did your fluid smell burnt or in any way discolored? That could be an indicator of tranny problems. I would definetly have the codes pulled and see what comes up. 2002, by chance is it still in warranty?
Did you happen to put the truck back to stock with the tuner and see if that makes a difference? I ask because I have a Superchips tuner and my tranny has been acting up a little bit lately.... (NOT saying it's the tuner jast asking) I would definitely check for codes first though with the overdrive light blinking.
I have a 02 psd and had the same problem around oh say 54,000 miles around 76,000 lost reverse and 3rd up..tranny toast. It was out of warranty or so said 3,000 dollars for new set up.I would go get it checked. When I had the tranny replaced I told the dealer about the flashing light and they said that I should have had it checked then and probably would have not had to get it replaced so early.I have 118,000 on my rig now and have had no real problems with the rebuilt tranny. Here is another tip change fluid to the T with the manual and if you ever get the tranny hot above normal then you better get the fluid changed within 5k or as soon as possible. This is my own experience so take it for what its worth.
I have a diablo chip in my 350, I changed the springs in the tranny. did you do that? with more power from the chip the shifting is harder, you may want to look into that. those stock tranny springs look flimsy as compared to the diablo tranny springs.
When My speed sensor went out it caused some problems but not going into reverse. Pull the codes and see what it says. My overdrive light flashed as well when this sensor went south. The PCM uses the sensor to know when to shift. I would want to find out why it was 2 qts low on fluid.
