hey guys, i have 1988 f250 7.3 , was backing trailer up hill and had a pop in front end, there went the weasel, no pull forward or back in frontend, you can lock hubs and turn driveshaft with hand, put transfer in gear and shaft won't turn by hand. did i break pinion do you think? and i think i have d44 with counter rotation is this right? tag on diff is 54-e8tatc on one side and 610311-1 on other . seems like i saw 44 on there somewhere back in fall but can't remember..also locking hubs are different on either side, but seem to work ok, have had them out a few times. one turns all way around to lock other just inch or so to lock, one with two lock nuts inside one with ratcheting nut .can you help me?thanks alot .
a busted hub can cause this also. try locking your hubs and look at the axle shaft between the knuckles to see if either are spinning freely. if so it's a hub. if neither spin it could be a busted axle, u-joint or internal workings. leave tcase out of 4wd while checking. hope this helps
hubs ok, took plug out to see if i could look in there. if you turn driver axle side gear turns ok, turn pass. axle and carrier turns and you can't stop it with screw driver, ok turn drive shaft and pass axle tries to turn but you can stop it with your hand. l can't see any broken stuff or any thing much really . if driveshaft turns to left to go forward does this mean counterrotation ring and pinion? thanks for any help.
I had this happen on the Dana 28 in my bronco 2. The hubs are working and the axles turn as well as the driveshaft when the transfer case is engaged. Something inside the differential went pop and I am interested to see what it was when I take it apart.
i have found that my axle is a d44 ifs with trac loc . i'm wondering if i might have snapped the pinion at the yoke end, because if you turn the driveshaft the pass. axle tries to turn, still haven't found if it is standard or counter rotation.
