I have an 86' f-150 with an 300 I6 and a T-18 tranny. I recently put a 4" lift and some 33's on it, along with a whole new dash and guages. My question is, what can I do to the I6 to make it have enough power to pull my waterski boat? Or should I look into putting a 351 in? If so do I need a new tranny or can I keep the same one. I also live at 6000' so I think that may have alot to do with the power I get right now. Any advice is much appreciated.
i just finnished doing a efi ecc-IV 302 to efi ecc-IV 351w swap on my 86 f250..not sure wich tranny you have and how much hassle it would be. my tranny is a c6 i know that (4wd auto w/overdrive). and i have alot of very recent expericenes with the swap so i might be able to answer specific questions
the boat weighs close to a ton but even on just everyday driving it doesn't have very much go power. whould putting new heads on it help much or is it not worth the money. on the exhaust dual headers for the I6 are hard to find any sugestions.
Sorry, the 351W will provide a lot more power. The 6 gives it down at a lower rpm, but the windsor puts out over 300lbs of torque, and it a lot cheapier to give it more power, but you will use more gas.
You use a lot of power on the high elevation. You probably need to get fuel injection to make anything run better.
3.70/3.73s would do worlds of wonder for your current setup... 3.08s + 33s + 300 + boat = no power.
3.55s would be ok, but I wouldn't swap gears unless I was going higher, if you have OD, I'd go with 4.10s

If i were u i would stick with the T-18 they are good for a 2 ton truck; i think that will handle all the power u could get. The 351 would be a good swap too they are a hot engine.
4.56 gears would be pretty steep on a 300 with only 33s. 4.11s wouldn't be too bad, especially he was towing a lot. I've driven an EFI 300 with 31s and 3.08s. It was bad enough in OD that I can't imagine someone driving that combo with 33s. I can't imagine how that would suck at 6000'. I'm used to driving a 3.50 geared 300 with 235/75s. It has nice power.
