well, my question is this. my neighbor has a 84 with the 300 from a junkyard in it. he went deer hunting and now it has aquired a knock. start it up and it sounds good, let it warm up you can hear a tapping/knocking coming from it. did some quick checks, all but one (#1) plugs are wet and has some oil up around the treads...plus one of them were cracked. double checked the torque specs on the rockers and they were good. found fuel leaking from the EGR valve, but not too sure if its cause i removed the air cleaner and the hoses. my next idea is checking out the rod bearings. any other things while i'm at it. it kinda sounds like a diesel :
"From a junkyard" and "Went deer hunting" says something like: "I don't really know alot about this engine and when I went hunting I did a little muddin' (had to ya' know) and revved her up a little too much. Since then I've had this awful loud knock way down deep. What could be the problem?"
Am I close?
If that is the case, you could have spun a bearing.
that what i told him to begin with. but i'm starting at the top and working down. so far i found a few things bad. i just got off the phone with him giving him an update. when i drove the truck over here it had plenty of power and the oil pressure was good.
when got the engine from the junk yard he had them replace the timing gear, water pump, oil pump, and alternator before they even put it in the truck. so, i'm thinking he just got junk to replace junk.
chux, your friend is learning a valuable lesson. Let him be a part of it.
After my first engine lesson I always did a stand test on everything for any used engine. The replaced parts could have been good...just not much to work with.
could it be an exhuast leak from somewhere by the manifold. that kinda where it sounds like it coming from. i put my hand on the block and can't really feel anything knocking. it does speed up when rev'd. exhaust manifold crack? cause it quite till it warms up. maybe the crack is expanding with the heat. i noticed the O2 sensor is not hooked up either and half the wiring is exposed at the connectors. maybe i took on a bigger job than i thought.

You said that you are working from the top down, then proceed with your plan. An exhaust leak is an all-together different sound than a knock. Have you checked for metal in the oil?
Get your friend to help - unless he's paying GOOD money.
get a stethascope listen to the motor or use a long screwdriver find out where the noise is comming from pull plug wires see if the noise changes narrow it down a little "engine knocking" is pretty vague
the oil was in need of change but no metal was found and nothing on the drain plug. i pulled the number 3 wire while running the knock softened then came right back. it coming from under and at the back of the block on the passenger side. i got a good list of parts needed for him to go out and get. now i just need to find where the O2 sensor hooks up. thanks for all the good info.
just an update. i put everything i took off back on and started it. run for a bit til warm, and it started to make it normal noises again. this time i took a can of parts cleaner and sprayed looking for any leaks. well, i found more crap loose...all intake and exhaust bolts were loos and oneon the backside was missing. tightened all of them ran it. now it just down to the knocking noise. the noise is alot louder under the truck so, while i'm getting ready to drop the pan i found the missing exhaust bolt behind the starter. this is where i'm at now. thanks again for the input.

alrighty then....i got the pan off, and not too much to my surprise. all the end caps are loose. the number 6 is pretty bad, but the rest i can still see the serial number from ford on them.
off to da parts store i go....hope this is the fix.
I have an '83 F-150 6 cylinder with the same kind of knock. Since I have alot of time on my hands and not much money, I pulled the engine and flipped it. #1 rod would jiggle up and down and side to side, so I pulled the rod cap. A can of worms quickly came to mind when I looked at the bearings. After pulling a main bearing, I ran to NAPA and ordered a crank kit. The oil smelled alot like fuel and was really runny. A fuel pump is on order.
these sixes have a problem running rich , which thins the oil , any thing close to over worn or loose will knock with out a doubt
gota change the oil reg. and use good oil in them.
I have over 220,000 on mine, ran great . and the oil pump took a dump, and spun a bearing. now knock knock ,bang, bang.
found a good junker motor for 300. bucks as oposed to 1100.oo rebuild. got lucky the junker was a newly new Jasper, what luck
