I am taking my F-250 in for ball joint replacement. The mechanic said that it is common for them to go out, and when they do they get tight not loose. Causing the steering to be to tight and not "return" back to straight after adjustment. I will post after the install and give results.
I am also building one kick-a@@ push bar out of schedule 40 5 1/2 in steel pipe. I will take pictures and post when i'm done this weekend.

Really? I had mine replaced at about 44K. Just the upper and lower left side. They made thumping sounds when going over large bumps. I always thought that the ball joints loosened up. How does it get tighter? Or is there just more resistance to movement? Do you have pics of the old ones?
I have 52k on the truck. The mechanic said that the ball joints on SDs get tighter for some reason instead of loose when they go bad. I will mention to him that I want the old ones and take a picture for ya'll. If he's right and they do get tighter, it would definitly explain why there is no steering return. Mine hasn't made any noise though. How do you post a picture on the site? When I'm done with the push bar and ball joints I'll need to know how.
Hey Tuna, my 99' F-350 did the same thing, the truck had 28 k miles on it, the steering was tight, and would'nt return to center ! The tech said it felt like the ball joints were tight, they replaced the steering box, think they did the ball joints too ( cant find them in the repair order ) also had to replace the cams, to correct caster and camber, seems to me a week later they had to do it again ( the cams) left tire was leaning big time !! Good luck !! seems fine now 36 k on her now,, Mark
Mark, was it difficult to keep the truck going straight before your fix. I have to constantly be correcting direction. My caster and camber seems to be fine. When they fixed it was it a noticiable difference?
