Im going to be putting a spray tank inside my trailer
it draws 12v. dc about 15-25 amps
Can I tap into the power wire going into the trailer from
the truck for that kind of power?
the tank has a 12v battery on it--could I let the battery charge
off the power wire instead?
also the tank is generally in operation when the truck is off
any input or info appreciated
thanks
I would wire the tank battery to charge off of the truck's trailer charging circuit. It'll charge the battery when the engine is running and keep you from draining the truck battery so you don't get stranded.
What you are describing sounds nothing different then the way an RV would draw power. My truck feeds the 12 volt power in my trailer, which powers the trailer. My truck came with the camper package, but I assume the pigtails for the trailer plug is standard. It only feeds 12 volts when the ignition is on.
I've got a dump trailer with a battery. I use the existing wiring to keep the battery charged, but unplug the trailer when I use the lift so I don't put a strain on the trucks system. I would put a fuse on the charge line near the sprayer battery.
Whatever you do, make sure you put fuses in line there! Size them a little over the maximum draw of the sprayer. Put fuses on both the positive and the negative leads. The reason for the negative fuse is that if your truck's native negative lead somehow becomes disconnected from its grounding point, your sprayer could become the grounding point for the whole truck, and you don't want the load of the whole truck going thru your wiring.
