Mechanic say's I need to replace the upper and lower ball joints on my 91 F250 custom. Does anyone have any information, advice or documentation that might make this job go smoother for me?
I know there are tricks involved to get this job done.
I just did mine on my 84 f150 4x4. They are not that much different ,although ordeals such as this remind me why I really didn't want a 4x4. You can do it yourself I wouldn't try it witout the ball joint/universal press(looks like a c-clamp on steroids) and the right cups for the press. Otherwise just follow the steps in the book. I went up to Luke AFB to do mine and I decided to rebuild the front end to include the steering links and replacing all of the seals and completely relubing the bearings(mobil synthetic grease) and the hub locks. Of course the wheel alignment machine was broke so I had to do my best with a tape measure and take it in to brakes plus after work, but it drives great now.
I can check with Autozone on the tool. I was looking through the how to manual (similar to chilton) and they mention marking something with a white pen but I'm not understanding exactly what needs to be referenced. Have you done that? The ball joint's look like you press them in, screw them down, put the retaining pin in and call it a day.

I think that refers to the camber adjusting sleeve. When I did mine recently, i just left the sleeve in place when I removed the knuckle.
The free press rental from Autozone is worth its weight in gold.
If its a 4x4, check the front axle u-joints. if they feel like they might need serviced in the near future, you may as well replace them while everythings already torn apart.
One little thing the manual doesn't mention is that you need to put a jack under the knuckle when you tighten the nut on the lower b/j, otherwise the stud will just spin. Took me a few minutes and a few harsh words to figure that one out...
Not a terribly difficult job overall though, ended up being much easier than I anticipated. Took about 8 hours of not hurrying, including a run for lunch and parts. (to do all 4 ball joints and one u-joint)
