Transmissions - Torque Convertors for High Performance Applications?
I would like your thoughts regarding High Performance application torque convertors mainly, as I realize there are many to choose from, and perhaps that is the problem in that coming up with whay works for me, may not be for everyone?
I've looked at Precision, TCS, ATS, and DTT mainly to date.
I haven't found a website for DTT, but there are alot of testimonials on their torque convertor that gives it high praise.
Finding solutions to the transmission/torque convertor issue, regarding engines with 500 HP and more aren't necessarily easy to access, yet because the Dod*e guys have found the High HP sooner, there seems to be alot more information out there.
I suppose I want the best of all worlds...in having a tranny/TC that will hold up to endless towing, a high horsepower Powerstroke Diesel, and also give me the longevity of many many years of unequalled service! I realize it certainly won't be the cheapest TC out there, so I will be paying the premium dollar to achieve this goal.
If anyone could provide website links, it would be most appreciated!
Welcome aboard, Dale!
I'm not sure what brand Brian uses, but with a testimonial like this:
Customer Quote:
"The BTS torque converter is so efficient that it has the same feeling as the stock TC being locked! When the BTS TC locks up...well..hold on..you are going to go..right then, right now, so you'd better have that rig pointed in the right direction."
and a reputation like he's got, when the time comes for my new tranny, I'll be going to Lead Hill to get one from him.
I take it from your 500hp reference you are planning on making that much hp some day. I wish you good luck in doing that, and I hope you have a deep wallet. If you are looking to go that far, I would not even consider just a t/c upgrade. I would go straight to a all out BTS trans swap. Because if you have a good t/c and blow a stock tranny you will need to buy another t/c when you replace the blown trans anyway, cuz nobody will warranty a new trans with a old t/c that has had trans pieces flow through it. I happen to have a Precision t/c and I rebuilt my own trans with all of the upgrades and I have about 275-300hp and it is doing great, 25k since the rebuild and mods. DTT uses a single disc lock up clutch and claims to have held some very serious power with it. Most other companies use multi disc lock up clutches. I do not believe BTS sells his t/c outright. Suncoast in FL. does. I have heard of mixed results with ATS. TCS I assume you mean TCS out of TN. I do not know that they do diesel transmissions, but I could be wrong on this. FYI if you pay less than $2500 for the trans with t/c you are most likely not getting the best rebuild. A 4R100 t/c will fit a E4OD and is a pretty good upgrade at a reasonable $. Hope this helps.
Also the stock input shaft is only Rated for 300 HP. I would Not Spend 1000+ bucks on a converter and put it in a used trans. Its a waste of Money. Buy the Stock 4R100 converter from Ford and when the trans goes bad your out $150 + labor. Then go to Lead Hill and get a BTS It will hold the 500HP no problem.
