Help!! Iv'e got a 97 F150 with the 4.6L. It gradually started running rough & eventually had no power. After the process of elimination, I figured out that the converters were clogged. What is the deal with 4 converters? Are two pre-cats? If so, can they be eliminated, since converter design has improved since 97? I found an inexpensive converter "Magnaflow Carsound Universal Cat" online and wonder if two of these would solve my problem. I have to consider Texas pollution laws, seeing my inspection is due soon. I got an estimste from a local Muffler dealer and he quoted $850.00. The Dealer quoted $1100. to $1200. when I called them. I really don't want to spend that much on catalytic converters if I don't have to, that dosen't even include mufflers or tailpipe. Any input would be appreciated.
I wasnt sure if you had a 4x4 or a 4x2, so I posted the link to both. I have a Bassani Y pipe on my bronco. Not only does it give you a better exhaust note, it also helps cool youre exhaust temps AND you should have no problems passing the sniffer test. My 96 bronco passed with flying colors. Do you currently run a catback system? I am not sure what the tubing used youre particular Bassani application is, but my bronco was 3", which was perfect for a performance catback.

Thanks for the info WheelMA1 & Bob, the truck is a 2x4 XLT w/a 4.2 and completely stock, from the stereo to the exhaust. (I got married last year, it was my wife's truck & she got my new 4x4-ain't love grand?) It is a 3" in/outlet so I will look into the catback. Texas just passed some very tight emission laws in larger cities, so I have to take that into account. But I do like the idea of helping on performance and gas. Once again, thanks for the help.
