Fuel system upgrade

Being new here, I must say this is quite a nice site. Lots of good info to be found. Anyway, I have a 86 F350 with a carbed 460 with in tank pumps. I rebuilt the engine and warmed it up a bit with the standard stuff, cam, intake, headers, ect. The stock fuel system only provides 4psi fuel pressure which is a bit low for a carbed system which usually likes between 6 and 7psi. Two thoughts, one is to put an electric pump in line down on the frame and regulate it at the motor, like the injected trucks use, or a mechanical pump on the motor itself. Any thoughts? Thanks

BigTork,

Sounds like we have the same truck!!! I'd replace the stock pump with an after-market one, and put an external regulator on it (also aftermarket) and set it to where you want the pressure. Then you're good-to-go.

Personally, I'm considering an aftermarket MPFI setup myself...roll-your-own based on the Holley Commander 950 Universal kit. I just need to figure out the fuel pump issues, tank selector issues, and return lines and I'm in (I can do the rest for sure). Anyways...off topic, but thought you might be interested.

Welcome to the forum!

Thanks Dan,

Replacing both factory pumps was my first thought also. But the only in-tank pump I found is rather expensive (times 2) as well as the labor of dropping the tanks. So I thought by utilizing the factory pumps along with an aftermarket pump I could save some agrivation. By the way, we do have the same truck, crew cab, dually, the whole thing and I love it.
