i have an 1969 f-100 w/ 360 and when at idle head lights, interior lights flicker in time w/ engine firing at lower rpm range.rev it up lights stay bright. wondering what it could be. thanks. ps new batt. also.
Clean all your charging system connections and grounds.
The Voltage regulator doesn't Kick in until about 800-850 rpm & thus causing a major current use at idle & causing the lights to flicker.
Of course the other reason would be because of the headlight switch.
Ford's headlight system runs the power to the headlights thru the switch & that is where the circuit beakers also located.
You could do a headlight relay upgrade where the power is taken directly from the battery and increase the illumination as well.
Typically when your lights are dim at idle and brighten up above idle the first thing to check is the altenator belt for correct tension and see if it is worn. If your idle RPMs are on the low side you would not be spinning the alt. fast enough to energize the charging system, hence it picks up off of idle.. Another possiblity is the brushes in the altenator are getting weak. As for lights flickering in time with ignition pulses would mean that they would need to blink 600 to 900 times per minute.
thanks for your help. do you by pass the circuit breaker on the up grade or how do you do this. thanks. and replying to 68torino.yes i agree with you on the flickering W/engine firing. i should have said w/engine lope. ha ha. I will check the alt belt tension put new one on maybe not thight enough. thanks.
With the upgrade, the wire that goes from the switch to headlight
that normally powers the headlights turns into the wire circuit
that actuates the Relay instead.
