I've got a 91 ranger ext. 4.0L 5spd and the problem I have is that it's stuck in 4x4 hi. I push the button and I don't get any clicking from the ECM. The 4x4Lo has not worked since I bought it from a friend one year ago. I had the same problem back in the summer so I took it to my garage and they said they tested everything then while putting two wires between two spot on one of the connectors the transfer case motor switched back into 2Lo. I drove for six months using the 4x4 off and on when needed and no problems. 3 weeks ago I got into 4x4 Hi and now I'm stuck.
I read the other posts on this site regarding the "clicking" and no 4x4 engagment but I have no "clicking".
Any help or thoughts would be appreciated.

There are several posts here about this problem. Sounds like the electric motor needs to be cleaned or replaced. A well placed "smack" with a rubber mallet will sometimes solve the problem.
When I check at the 10 pin connector there isn't any power......I suspect there should be. My Chilton Manual doesn't include any of the 4x4 stuff.
I've hit the transfer motor with a hammer and checked fuses nothing to show a problem yet.
The ECM self test is okay.
Help if you can.
The Ford Dealer is talking about 400 bucks.
ive got a 1991 ranger also . i had the exact same problem . sometimes you would push the button and it would click and go in 4x4 sometimes push button and no click very frustrating, i took off the electric shift control disassembled it cleaned it put it back together and bingo it worked like a charm. there is a website called " the ranger station " go there then scroll down to the transfer case section they will show you step by step how to do it . hope this helps.
I read the section on the transfer case clean up at "the Ranger Station". Sounds straight forward. Did you have 4 wheel low or was it not working before aswell?
first of all let me say that 4x4 low on my truck hasnt worked since the middle of 1992 push the button and no click but as you might guess i never need it so it was not an issue for me to get fixed.however when i pushed the 4x4high and got no click thats when i took action. when i cleaned the shift motor it fixed the click /noclick issue in4x4 high but did nothing to the 4x4low. one thing ive noticed that when its warm outside it goes in and out of 4x4 perfectly but when its 30deg. or less sometimes it takes 2or 3 button pushings sometimes more to get it to disengage. i think im going to try mobile 1 synthetic atf in the transfer case see if that helps

The problem was fixed today. I read the article at The Ranger Station and took the papers and the truck to work.....no time to fix it so I took it over to the nearest garage and told the mechanic what I wanted to have done. He removed the electric transfer motor and found dirty brushes and also found one of the magnets had come unglued inside the sleeve. No wrecking yards had a used one so he got a power window motor and took the casing and magnets off one that was about the same size and had to cut off 1/4inch of the casing. It went together perfectly and now I have 4x4 HI and 2wd but no 4x4 low. The mechanic thinks the switch is the 4x4 low problem.
I haven't checked the fuses since the 4x4 hi was fixed. I did before to see if that was the problem and found all fuses to be working. I didn't check the fuses under the hood though....should I? I'll look things over tomorrow and see what I find.
Thanks for the input.
Whoever the mechanic was that fixed the 4 hi should get a bottle of Wild Turkey. It is rare nowdays to find someone that is willing to actually troubleshoot and fix. Most of the dealer mechs are R&R mechanics (remove and replace). Just keep throwing parts at it until you get the right one. All the years I have been driving 4wd, I don't think I ever remember needing 4LO. If high is working, count this day as a good one and don't worry about it. But you never know. If a switch is all you need to fix low, go for it.
Just to clarify things....it wasn't the dealer that did the work. A young mechanic with his own shop and some good friends at the local wreckers. I have to thank the guy again for doing the fix.
The front u joints are going to be the next project to tackle...I may just bring it back to this guy. It's nice to have the right tools for the job.
