A intercooler is a radiant cooler between the turbo and the engine intake that cools the boost air before it enters you engine. Cooler air means more air and more power. It is usally mounted in front of the radiator.
An intercooler cools the air making more power, whether it is before or after the turbo I am not sure but someone will chime in that knows more than I.
intercooler cools the air that the turbo has heated up due to compression of the air. intercooling dosnt add any horsepower, just keeps horsepower that you loose in warm temps. need computer updates to have intercooler due to computer thinks there is a low boost condition due to the lower temps which cause lower boost, which in the end if you want more power gotta get cooler denser air into the motor to make more power
Thanks
I was kinda unsure myself ?
anyway here`s a tidbit for ya`ll, driving to LA this weekend was fine but coming home (heater on) I got about 50 miles less per tankful,Iknow it goes through A/C pump, just thought I `d share

i don't think that is entirely true, an intercooler does add hoursepower. if you ran the aircharge right off the turbo and into the intake it would be much hotter,ie. less dence, and less able to carry as much fuel whatever the outside temp is. thus an intercooler takes that aircharge and cools it making it able to hold more fuel and produce more power. cool air is more dence( more oxygen molicues per cubic foot ) to carry more fuel...at least thats what i've heard
If i'm not mistaken it has a charge air cooler or cac for short. It goes from the air filter through the turbo then infront of the radiator back around to the engine where it enters nice and cool!
Yes you can put an intercooler on a '95. You will also have to change the exhaust side of the turbo housing [to a smaller unit] to allow the turbo to spool up faster, to offset the potential turbo lag produced by the greater amount of air between the turbo and the combustion chamber. Also you will have to cut two holes in the radiator support for plumbing the air tubes. Hypermax and Banks [among others] sell kits, complete or parts, although they are spendy-$3500.00-$4500.00 approx. Unless you tow or haul alot of weight it might not be worth the expense.
