I think thats a good question, im trying to decide what pads to buy, i am a brake abuser, so severe duty pads are my usual, is there anything better?!!?!?!!?!!!
Yea, there's all kinds!! Severe duty, light duty, metallic, semi-metallic. Some squeak and some dont. Some are soft and some are hard!!!!!!!! What up!!! Someone Help!!
When picking pads you have to decide what you would rather replace more often, the pads or the rotors. The better the pad, the more the rotor wears. Notice noone offers a lifetime warranty on rotors.
If you are drag racing or hauling a 15.000 pound trailer, yea, go for all the pad you can get. Otherwise stick to a $12 set of pads and change them every 20k or sooner.
The harder the pad, the longer it wears. I have used metallic pads, they sure are nice. They do squeal and they do kill your rotors.
I would guess the biggest thing now is ceramic pads, because they come with a lifetime warranty. Considering a rotor costs from $40 to $120 for full sized trucks, I think I rather replace ten sets of pads in 100k miles than two $50 rotors.
I run a fleet of school buses, and believe it or not, the best mileage, wear, and all around long lasting brakes I use on FORDs are OEM FORD products. I work for a state school, and always look for bargains, but we replaced aftermarket pads and shoes twice a soften as we do the OEM product. This is on E-350 diesels.
I know you say that brand X makes the shoes for FORD, but I have yet to see a brand X with the same composition as the OEM shoes & pads. I have records on my buses dating back to their beginning, 1986, 87, and 91 models. Some have over 300,000 miles!
I wish someone could tell me why the left rear shoes wear out before the rights. I have about 10 pair of new right rear shoes!!
