98 Explorer - 110,000 miles - 4.0 code E engine
We have the engine out, on a stand with the heads off. The plastic guides on all the chains have come apart, and the engine is siezed up - it seems like the pistons got hot & expanded.
Would it be safe to reuse this block? Would new pistons and chains and guides do the job? What is it like to get the chains properly timed - are special tools required? Or would it be best to get a rebuilt long block engine, or even change over to a different engine? This explorer is in really nice shape otherwise.
