Question Trouble Code P0402--what to do?

My 98 X EB with the 5.0 had its first Check Engine light come on ever!!!!!(celebrate later )

It came up with two Trouble Codes in the PCM: P 0402-- EGR excess flow ( 2nd one in another string after this one)

Questions:

1. Does this mean I need a new EGR valve?

2. If so where is it in the 5.0?

3. Can a novice mechanic repl it?

Any feedback will be greatly appreciated

As I recall the Check Engine Light will only come on for this fault after the engine is at full operating temperature. As I see you are in NH and I'd assume it takes a little while to get to temp up there, if it were summer you'd see it more. As for the location of the sensor, I can't help I had the 4.0. I do however think it only cost about $20 and wasn't too hard to replace, just a threaded connector and a vacuum line.

Check your DPFE sensor. My '96 threw a P0401 code and it was the DPFE sensor instead of the EGR system. Replaced the DPFE and CEL went away.

OK feeling really stupid but what does DPFE stand for, and where is the sensor, I realize its an emissions thing, but im not in the know about this one

Im willing to try anything i can do on my own rather than paying some one so bring on the DPFE sensor!!

I believe your EGR sensor/valve is on the back of the engine against the firewall on the passenger side. Before changing your sensor, I would clean the EGR valve first, they get nasty dirty with deposits and my EGR valve got clogged and stuck...setting off a CEL.

All I did was pull off the valve, clean it with a lot of carb cleaner and it fixed my problem. Buy a Haynes repair manual, it will show you the way. It is an easy fix....the hardest thing is getting to the bolts to take the valve off.

good luck!
