Angry No Fuel Flow

I accidently ran my '50 F2 dry the other day and I finally got around to dumping 5 gallons into it today

now I try starting it and it cranks forever but never fires up, also the fuel filter doesn't appear to be getting any gas flowing through it

I know there is a possibility the fuel pump is not working but what else can I try, or is there a way to "prime the pump"???

I would try disconnecting the fuel line to the carburetor and have someone try cranking it again; being ready to stop if the gas begins to flow.

Do you have a fuel filter between the tank and the fuel pump?

I'll give that a try and see what happens tomorrow
there's no other fuel filter other than the one in front of the carb

These systems flow so easy there must be something obvious. When I run out of gas (frequently - no gas gauge) all I have to do is dump some in the tank, pull the choke on full and hit the starter. It fires up right away with a minimum of cranking.

On the basis of my own fuel frustrations, I'd first unscrew the line from the shutoff valve at the tank and see if you have any gas leaving the tank. It doesn't take much crud to block the flow. Second, you should see fuel in the bowl. If not, is it possible the line from the tank has a hole in it allowing air to enter? Third, as Tom said, unhook at the carb and see if you're pumping anything.

Let us know what you find.

well I shut off the valve to the tank and opened up all the connections one by one
I didn't find any blockages, and what fuel was in the lines flowed freely (once right in my big mouth)

so I guess the pump's dead unless someone else has any other ideas?

2nd question, if the pump is dead should I just go with the orignal type mechanical pump or should I take the time and install an electric pump??

Unless you like an electric motor humming in your ears all the time stick to the mech fuel pump. With electric, if you lose your battery you also lose your fuel pump. With the mech pump you can still "roll" start if necessary. Just my opinion.

Fuel flows fine from the tank to the pump, when I crank it the fuel filter show gas going in (kind of foamy as it spurts though), fuel flows out of the filter OK also

no fuel pumps out of the jets on the carb

I'll take the carb off later to check for blockages......

anyone have any other ideas?

Some of the carburetors had internal fuel filters, not sure of yours.

Have you tried pouring a tablespoon or so of fuel in the carburetor and cranking it. Sometimes that will get things going if it has been sitting a while. There is a potential of fire if you spill the gas anywhere, so be careful.

I haven't tried dumping fuel in the carb yet I'll try that in a little while

I forgot to mention this is a '66 289 out of a mustang with an edelbrock 4 bbl carb if that makes a diference

Hey! toonman i am sure you fixed that fuel line problem by now, i would certainly invest in a clear in line filter so you could visibly monitor your fuel for dirt or rust particles.

yeah it's working now, have the clear filter already.....
don't know what the problem was but after loosening every connection to check for flow it magically works.
must have been some gunk in the lines
