i went to turn my headlights on the other night and they didn't work, right away at least. after about 15 seconds they came on. that happened about two times and now they don/t come on at all.
i guess my question is are they both burned out (how often does that happen) or do i have a short? if it's a short, is it common?
Pretty common problem for first gen Explorers, defective headlight switch. But I never heard about such a problem on second gen (do I remember correct: you have 2-nd gen Ex, right?).
I would've checked fuses first, then bulbs, and only then switch. Sorry for not being specific, I have little knowledge of II-generation Explorers.
I have actually seen both low beams burn out at the same time on a 2 headlight system; it was not a Ford though. You can try turning on the high beams as your next move to rule out the headlight switch. After that, take your ohm meter to each bulb to see if it's out, or pull it out and look.
What year is the Explorer?? Like what Jet Lizard said, the 1st gen ('91-'94) Explorers have problems with the headlight switch. Replace that and you should be ready to go.
If you have a 2nd gen ('95-'01) Explorer and your headlights don't work, try to turn your highbeams on. If they work, then it's more than likely your multifunction switch, a.k.a., the wiper/turn signal stalk.
But before doing all those, check if your headlights are burnt out. CowboyBilly9Mile is correct about the headlights, they can blow out at the same time. Heh...if happened to my friend while driving in his '95 XLT. It's kinda funny and gave him an excellent excuse to get a pair of Silverstars.
