Brake controller mounting

I am wanting to install the Tekonsha Prodigy (dad went out and blew his days wage on it) this weekend and was thinking of installing it beneath the 'junk hole'. Is there anything behind the plastic panel that I shouldn't drill into?

weldman ,
As well as I remember there is nothing there if you dont drill deep but to keep from drilling you can go to Radio Shack and get a male and female 6 prong plug kit and take your harness and make you a seperate harness for your brake controller the new controllers work in any position, I just lay mine in the floor board on the hump when I am done, I just unplug it and put the wire up under the dash and put the controller on the console and they are no unsightly holes hope this helps out.

Thanks for the hints SVO! My dad tells me that the prodigy has a quick disconnect system on it already, so I'll see if I can do something as you are describing! (I haven't seen the thing yet)

Since you list a 2002 F250 in your signature, I'm not sure what truck you are installing the controller in. If it is the 2002 F250 and since you list "cmpr" in the options, it should have come with a brake controller pigtail (connector with 5 wires). Under the dash you will find a plug (not too accessable) to plug it into. Just follow the schematic with the pigtail (the big overall schematic , not the little pigtail drawing) and the one with the controller to match the necessary wires (not all are necessary, depending on the controller). I just did my F350 last weekend and it took about 1/2 an hour to do. On my 350 there was a lot of space behind the panel under the junk hole and that is where I mounted mine.

I am not familiar w/ the prodigy controller, but isnt it unsafe to mount your brake controller in a spot you cant reach if you need to manually put the trailer brakes on? With that in consideration, i found no other spot to mount my brake contoller beside drilling into the dash under that tray hole thing.

Yes, you do indeed have to have the thing hard mounted to apply the trailer brakes in emergency. I most likely will mount it below the hole in the dash (2002).
Thanks!

Brake controller mounting

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 28-Mar-02 AT 01:19 PM (EST)]Why not mount it *in* the hole? I did, looks great, is within easy reach and doesn't get bumped when getting in/out.

I mounted the Progidy with 3 strips of velcro attached to the top of the hole. I drilled a 5/16" hole int he back, upper left corner of the hole. Big enough to feed the wires through, but not the whole plug. The hole is small enough and located where it can't be seen from the sitting position, even if the controller is removed.

Take a look:

I used double sided tape to mount mine on the removable panel. See [link:http://www.rvtrader.dingojunction.com/SD02/F350/Index.asp#CB|Brake controller mounting]

I mounted my prodigy on my dash under the junk hole with drill holes, screws and the whole bit... No problems. I did get some of that plastic wire protective tubing to run my wires through to dress them up a bit. worked out nice.

I needed to use my trailer yesterday.I didn't want to do any drilling in my dash.I removed the two screws that mount the diagnostic plug and used one of the screw holes and a strip of velcro to mount the controller bracket, with an extra hole I placed in the center of the bracket. The diagnostic plug is now just above and behind the removable panel and is held there with a wire tie.It took about ten minutes.I may remount it later, but it isn't bad at all considering the time spent.

Thanks for all the help guys! I did get it mounted, finally! I used the quick disconnect mount just because I thought that it looked better and for the feature it offered.

I mounted it under the junk hole because I like to throw my wallet or cell phone in there.

Here's a pic!
