Don't know your model, so jsut guessing here.

First, what kind of tranny do you have? I assuem an auto but if it is manual, usually there is no dip stick, there are two plugs on manuals. One to drain one to check and fill.

Some newer autos seem to come without dip sticks under the presumption you will sell the vechicle before it needs tranny service, yeah sure. Some of these will also have the two fill/drain plugs.

Usually the fill and drain plugs are large, about 1 inch diameter plugs with a square drive hole in them. Usually you can remove these plugs with a 3/8 inch drive ratchet. They are usually very tight the first time, I have broken one drive extention removing the plug in the past.

Good Luck and tell us what tranny you have.

It is an automatic tranny and it does have a large plug in the drain pan with a small screw in the center of it. I wanted to make a unit to flush it myself if i could. The other fords I have I can drop the pan, drain the converter, fill at the dipstick. I was planning on droping the pan and possible trying to suck the fluid from one of the lines going back to the trans. Wondering if ford has special tools to fill? I assume the small screw in the pan is a standpipe. Do I service with engine running ,at warm temp, and let the excess fluid come from the standpipe after the converter is full ?

You are correct. There is a stand pipe, and you fill the transmission warm and let the excess run out.

There is no plug on the torque converter. You could modify the following procedure for your truck. This would be close, but not exactly written for an Explorer.
