We recently bought a 98 Mountaineer. It is a great Truck. But The rear hatch does not Lock with the remote or when you lock the other doors. You have to use the key. And when you go over some bumps the door ajar sounds goes off. And one more thing. If you leave the rear hatch unlocked. The interior lights won't go off until you have driven awhile. If you lock the rear hatch the lights go out. Are these all related problems?
I assume the rear hatch has a powered door lock?? OH, almost forgot. The rear wiper usually works but sometimes does not.
I know this is an ancient thread. But the question wasn't answered and I am dealing with most of the same issues. When I use the power locks, I hear what sounds like gears grinding in the liftgate. The liftgate and rear glass won't lock unless I use the key. Does anybody know what the problem is and is it a simple fix?
The rear hatch latches have the "door ajar" switches too. Don't know if there's 1 or 2. If the latches are crudded up they might prevent the switch from working properly. Clean them with LectraKleen real good then WD40 or the like. The interior lights will go off after you start driving if "door ajar" is indicated. As for the wipers, ???. Might have something to do with the door showing open??? Never ran the rear wiper with the door open, don't know if it works.
Don't know if this is related but my hatch wouldn't lock when I pressed the lock switch in the cargo area even though I heard the mechaninsm. I found that the hatch door button had been unscrewed and was catching the grommet and preventing it from locking. I tightened it up (down) and it worked. Hope your fix is that easy...
