Lightbulb Air Intake insulation

If anyone is looking for a cheap way to insulate their air intake tube, home depot sells a product that may work. It's only $15 at home depot. I don't know how thick it is but you get 25ft so you can apply multiple layers. Just go to www.homedepot.com and enter "161459" into the search box (without quotes). The product is called Reflectix.

If anyone knows of other cheap methods for insulating the intake tube please post it.

For mine, I just bought some fiberglass pipe insulation, and wrapped it with a metalic tape, for less than $10. It's hard to tell how much it has helped since the temperature hasn't been above freezing for over a month now. Will be nice when it warms up and I can start getting gas milage again.
I have read that for every 10 degrees less temperature you gain 1 HP, so incomparison of the K&N to the Insulated K&N, there is close to a 40 degree difference according to Lone_Ranger01's link, so that would amount to a 4 HP increase. Not bad for 15 bucks.

good concept, but i dont know that the engine compartment would heat up the incoming air all that much, especially w/ how fast the air is moving? Also, i have read that at 50mph or so, the ambient temp of the motor compartment is just a few degrees warmer then that of the outside. Dunno though.... just my $.02

I think any gain from wrapping is offset by how ugly it looks. Just my opinion.

The air gets warmed up after you drive for awhile because the heat off of the engine warms up the intake tube. This causes the air to get hotter as it passes through the tube. It's not the temp of the air when it enters the intake that's hot, it's the temp of the air by the time it enters the engine. So wrapping the intake tube would seem to help keep the air cooler. IMO.
