I had a problem like that on my Bronco. Everything was tight, the box, ball joints, tie rods... But you could turn the wheel 2-3" back and forth. A Mechanic told me it was the steering shaft. He said they use a shaft in a shaft design with a rubber (plastic?) isolator in between. The isolater goes away and you get play. I think that Flaming River makes a new shaft that will tighten the steering up.
If Flaming River doesnt carry it try Bronco Graveyard, I just purchased one from them for the same problem, if you grab the steering shaft, you can move it two inches with your hand. It was 215 bucks, but I like the idea of a new shaft versus going to the boneyard for one.
Got one at the junk yark yesterday. Installed it today. $50 and it was already pulled off real tight much better now I can pass inspection Couldn't find a tilt wheel but you don't miss what you never had I guess
On a somewhat related note, I just got mine back from the shop today after a full steering system replacement. Pump & hoses, new box, new shaft, and all the links. Man-o-man...what a difference! It'll never drive like a sports car, but I think it's about as close as possible now for a 1 ton....has to be what it was like new.
On top of 6 fresh tires, all new brakes and a super-dooper alignment job, I'm good-to-go for another 100k!
