A few days ago I posted a thread in the 80-86 forum asking why my truck quits running when slowing down. All this happened while it was snowing out. Today I took it out and it runs excellent except when I start it up while the engines warm. I had to hold the key about 5 seconds before it would fire. Are these two occurances related? Whats going on here? Thanks
Sounds to me like a fuel pump. If it would die when you slow down and didn't wanna start unless you cranked it 5 sec. Your fuel is most likely starting to lose it's prime. That or your carter 1bbl is playing choke games with you, but it sounds more like your fuel pump.
I go through 3 tanks of gas a week so it should be good gas, but just incase I put in 3 bottles of Heet just to try something and its been running good so far. My truck's been known to have a problem for a few days and one day it'll be mysteriously fixed. It has a mind of its own.
A new mechanical fuel pump is $14-$26 (depends on brand) plus ship from that online parts store: www.partsamerica.com
You may want to replace your fuel filter at the same time.
Replacement is two bolts and two lines with lots of room to work. If you suspect a faulty pump, this is a cheap fix or "check". Minimally it eliminates the pump as the cause of stall.
If you have the OEM 1 bbl carb. I would think it is going/gone south! Not very good carbs and you can only get remans. I have gone through 3 in the last 12 months with poor outcomes. Switching to an Offy intake and Holley 390cfm 4bbl this week.
