gutless in 4th

my bronco's 302 is a good engine, it gets good gas mileage, reliable, and has good power for what it is, heck on a dirt road i can spin my tires all the way to the top of third, but when i hit fourth it is comletely gutless, it accelerates slightly faster if i pump it two or three times, but nothing really spectacular. what would cause this?

Put an exhaust on that truck. My trucks 351 really woke up in 4th gear with the np435. Now when im on the parkway, that sucker will move when i give it some gas, and tats only with a muffler. Set of headers and exhaust, you'll definetly feel a difference

really? cause it doesn't have much restriction as it is, it can be improved, yes(2' pipes down from manifold to a 2 1/2" pipe bout 2' long and a 12" glasspack) but i wasn't thinking it was that bad, but thats on my agenda anyways.

Is 4th an overdrive gear on that tranny? If so, that plus altitude might explain the gutlessness.

My stuff's all stock, so I don't do anything with the mixture, but the 89 will take more spark advance up here than it will at lower elevations. All my 4th gears are OD, so they're all gutless! As far as the mixture goes, I would think if your carb is set for sea level, you could lean it a bit. How fast are you going when you shift into 4th?

You lean out for altitude, but even my MAF EFI 302 is gutless at alititude (6300 ft here). That is a short-stroke engine (unlike a 300 or 351) and needs to rev. Do you have oversize tires? 3.55 gears wont pull well with tires taller than stock.
