Dual tanks

Hi all, I have 2 trucks- a 96 F150 and a 92 F250. Both have dual tanks and both bave stopped registering on the front tank. Both run fine out of both tanks but when pulling out of the rear tanks both trucks return fuel into the front tanks.If the front tanks are full the fuel just pushes out on the ground. The local mechanic told me that it is bad pressure regulators.Just don't sound right to me.

There is a recall about this problem. The check valves in the in-tank sending units can become faulty and allow cross flow between tanks.

i always start on my front tank. when that is done i go to the rear. when that is done i go back to the front and use the fuel that was returned to the front (about 1/4 tank for me). then i fill up. is there anything that can break by not addressing this? i wasn't aware that it was a problem.
